IN THE INFIRMARY, I heard a nurse in her hushed voice say to a nearby family that Japanese Americans could not be buried in Gila River, anywhere.

Sacred Indian land was not meant for outsiders.

“You may cremate your grandfather,” she told them softly, “and keep him safely in an urn.”

THE DAY KIMI finally woke up, Mama breathed out so loud it sounded like she’d been holding her breath long enough to swim across the Pacific.

I felt relief and exhaustion, and like a little crying kid. I thought I should be acting like a man, and was disappointed in myself that I was not.

I said thank you a thousand times.

And then I told the desert and the sky and the hawks, I told them I would take care of my sister and my mama, like I promised.

I was grateful for the dust devil that came along suddenly, which made everyone else clear out, and gave me an excuse for swollen red eyes.
